IN-VITRO FERTILIZATION

IVF

In its simplest form, In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is defined as fertilization achieved outside of the body. In this process, the female’s oocytes (eggs) are retrieved from the body and a prepared sample of the male partner or donor’s semen is introduced to the oocytes traditionally via insemination or individually via intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). After fertilization is confirmed, the newly formed embryos are held in culture for several days. The embryo(s) that have demonstrated their ability to develop, meeting the day 3 and day 5 milestones, may be transferred into the female’s uterus and/or cryopreserved for later use in a subsequent treatment cycle (Frozen Embryo Transfer, FET).
